Seriously Geeky Sundays – Small Screen Views

Well, it’s Sunday once more, and around here that means only one thing… Seriously Geeky Sundays!

This week we delve with great strength and determination into the world of the television, a real game changer since its inception that has changed the face of entertainment and information exchange forever!

Anyway, let’s tune in to the mission briefing, shall we?

The small screen, the telly, the idiot box; the television has had many names and gone through many changes since 1926. Today we’re focusing on our small screen habits.

Question 1 – Do you watch much television?

Not really! I find most of what is shown on TV in the UK to be, shall we say, not to my tastes. There’s a lot of emphasis on talent shows and reality programs, things which I found uninteresting back in the early 2000s, let alone now when they’re on their ten millionth series and still using the same, stale formulae. That and having to see the smug faces of Simon Cowell or David Walliams? No thank you!

The best series tend to wash up on streaming services these days instead, so I do most of my viewing there. That said, I do have a bizarre weak spot for that program where Gregg “I’m in everything now” Wallace and his mate stop people shopping like pillocks. No idea why, it’s all very odd.

Question 2 – What genres do you like to watch?

I tend toward science fiction for the most part, though historical series often catch my interest too. I also love some of the geekdom “classics” too, Buffy and Angel, Firefly… (I know Whedon’s a bumhole, but those series are gold!)

Generally speaking, I’ll give anything a try as long as it attracts my curiosity, variety is the spice of life and there’s a lot to be discovered if you open your mind to it.

Question 3 – What shows are you watching at the moment?

I am currently jumping between watching Buffy again (up to season six, very unhappy that Giles is gone!) and also enjoying Netflix’s Lost in Space, which I can recommend to anybody who enjoys sci-fi and robots that look just like the Geth from Mass Effect.

Question 4 – Is there any TV shows that you like to rewatch?

Given enough of a cooldown, and assuming that I enjoyed it of course, I’ll rewatch pretty much anything!

I’ve watched the harrowing Chernobyl about five times now, am on my second run of Buffy, have watched Firefly about three times and Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes who-knows how many times.

Some series I enjoyed but might not ever watch again now that I know what happens, however, are the likes of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.They’re good, but just so damned slow burning! I’m all for a moody, tension filled story but man, they were one hell of a ride!

Question 5 – Do you watch TV shows live or stream?

I pretty much exclusively stream my TV, though there’s a good few series I got into via DVD purchases, as I worked away a lot at the time and the hotel WiFi was rubbish!

As I said earlier, traditional TV doesn’t really provide much that I like anymore. Oh, apart from The Secret Life of the Zoo, as it’s filmed at Chester Zoo which is close to where I live! (I’m a member there too!)

Question 6 – What TV shows are you looking forward to the most?

At the moment, I’m not too sure!

I very much have one eye on the recently announced new series of Life On Mars, though I’m not entirely sure where they can go with it after series 3 of Ashes to Ashes wrapped up the story the way it did. Still, more Phillip Glenister as DCI Gene Hunt isn’t something I want to miss!

Also, whilst I’m late to the party, I do hope that Lost In Space keeps going, it’s an excellent sci-fi series and, quite frankly, anything starring Toby Stephens normally turns out very well!
