Hurray, it’s time to celebrate, for that is the theme of this week’s Seriously Geeky Sundays, as formulated with great skill and precision by our very own blogger extraordinaire, Heather of Just Geeking By! So, as always, many thanks to Heather for continuing to inspire me with these excellent challenges!
Let’s get into the real pork and beans of it, shall we?
Smiles, tears, drama; celebration in fandom can run the gauntlet of emotion as characters celebrate the small and big moments in life. As fans, we celebrate our love for those characters and the worlds they inhabit through anniversaries and milestones. This week looks at the idea of celebration from both sides of the fourth wall.
Question 1 – What Is Your Favourite Celebration Scene From a Fandom?
I’m going to horribly subvert the question here, because that’s the kind of awful human being I am, and go with the dinner scene in Alien.
Following a rather dangerous unscheduled trip to an uncharted planet, crew member Kane (played by the legendary John Hurt) ends up with a dangerous, creepy parasite stuck on his face. But all is good, because it falls off him and dies not long after he is dragged back to the cargo tug Nostromo for its journey back to earth.
To celebrate, the crew throw a big dinner before going back into stasis. All is going well until poor Kane… has a bit of indigestion. This is one of the most famous scenes in movie history, as well as one of the most disturbing. I have linked it below… don’t watch it if you’re squeamish or scared of late ’70s puppets…
Question 2 – Which Character’s Birthday Was the Most Memorable?
Most memorable for having one hell of a birthday party, it’s the titular Rocky from The Rocky Horror Picture Show!
Yes, Rocky, the “perfect man” made by mad scientist/sweet transvestite Professor Frank N Furter, celebrated his first (and only) special day by being created, having a song and dance number, listening to a Frank song and dance number, which was in turn interrupted by a Meatloaf song and dance number, before Frank stole it back in style for a reprise, before dragging the poor lad off to the bedroom. Turn about a party to remember!
Question 3 – What Does Celebration Mean to You As a Fan?
I’m not one for massive, overblown events, schedules and shows of your adoration, it tends to feel a bit too much like hard work to me (man I’m getting old!)
I’m more for celebrating my favourite things in geekdom by simply enjoying them for what they are. Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s birthday, I’ll sit and watch it. Final Fantasy VII having a celebration? I’ll pick up my Switch or pop in my original PS1 disc and have a blast.
Question 4 – What Was the Last Fandom Related Achievement or Milestone You Celebrated?
I’m going to be naughty here and talk about my own blog, well it’s heavily about fandoms right? And I’m certainly your fans!
So, I just want to thank you all for an amazing year here at Winst0lf Portal. Back in March, when this pandemic hit, it completely killed my inspiration and my poor blog died a death. But then, thanks to Heather and the amazing Pix of Shoot the Rookie, I started doing these Seriously Geeky Sundays challenge, among others, and my viewer count had exploded!
My goal was to reach the record from last year, 1088 views by New Years. but instead I am currently on just over 1800! 1800!!!

So thanks for sticking with me, and know that I love writing this daft content to entertain you all!
Question 5 – Have You Ever Had/Been to a Fandom Themed Celebration?
Only once or twice, to be honest.
My last attempt was when we recieved a press pass (ooh!) for an anime and gaming con in Manchester, in order to record a special episode of the Shart Select podcast (links at the bottom of the page).
Unfortunately, we were three old men in a tide of teens dressed as anime characters, we ended up feeling rather daft indeed and, I am ashamed to admit, ended up running away!
Question 6 – Do You Celebrate Any Important Pop Culture Dates Such As Movie Or Video Game Release Anniversaries?
Not really, it’s all I can do to remember my own wedding anniversary sometimes, remembering dates from fandoms is just beyond the power of the my tiny brain!
And that’s it, gang! Thank you, once again, for joining me, and don’t forget to follow all of the other writers under the #SeriouslyGeekySundays hashtag!
Congrats on reaching that many views recently!
